The police recovered valuables worth over €125,000 and reported two individuals for aggravated fraud against an elderly person. As part of the ongoing effort to combat fraud targeting the elderly, two individuals, seriously suspected of aggravated fraud in complicity, were identified, and a large quantity of gold jewelry was recovered and subsequently returned to the rightful owner.
The investigative activity originated during a check along a highway stretch, where officers from the Sala Consilina Traffic Police stopped a car with two people on board. Further checks on the vehicle led to the discovery of a skillfully hidden backpack containing numerous gold jewelry items, for which the occupants could not provide a plausible explanation. Subsequent investigations allowed the reconstruction of the entire story, establishing that the valuables were the proceeds of a scam perpetrated against an elderly woman. Specifically, the victim had been contacted by phone by a person claiming to be a law enforcement officer who, through tricks and deception, induced her to believe that the valuable items kept in her home needed to be inspected. Shortly after, an accomplice presented herself at the elderly woman’s home, falsely identifying herself as a law enforcement officer, and managed to have all the jewelry kept in the safe handed over to her before quickly leaving. The investigative activity allowed the identification of the alleged perpetrators, later recognized by the victim, and the recovery of jewelry with an estimated total value of approximately €125,000, including some items of particular sentimental value belonging to a family member of the victim; all the jewelry was returned to the rightful owner. Further investigations also revealed irregularities in the management of the car used by the alleged perpetrators, resulting in the referral to the Judicial Authority of the rental company managers for failure to comply with the communication obligations required by current regulations on car rental. The operation confirms the constant commitment of the State Police in combating fraud against the most vulnerable segments of the population and in protecting the elderly, through intense prevention, territorial control, and investigation activities that, in recent months, have allowed the identification of numerous perpetrators and the recovery of large quantities of goods illicitly taken from victims. © ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
